Fallowfield and Withington

Fallowfield and Withington are located roughly one mile from campus and three miles from the City Centre. They boast a richly diverse community with a large student population alongside long term residents, including lots of people who are elderly or may have young families, as well as those people who work at the Universities or have recently graduated.

Nightlife

With Owens Park halls at the heart of Fallowfield housing over 1000 students, there’s never a dull night when it comes to this southern area of Manchester. If you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere and a chat with your friends, there’s no better place than The Friendship Inn or The Ram for a cheap pint and a game of pool. Other favourites are Revolution, The Great Central and the ever-popular 256 – a former church turned stylish bar and restaurant.  The Font is also a great choice, with cheap cocktails and tasty food it’s a popular hit with students on weekends but retains its calm atmosphere during the week. Round the corner is Fallow Cafe, a tiny bar and live music venue that hosts the local bands and acoustic music, comedy nights and even the live literature event Verbose every 4th Monday of the month. And to round things off, new addition Koh Tao is Manchester’s answer to a Thai beach bar, offering Chang beers and cocktail buckets alongside a delicious daytime food menu. In Withington, Indigo Bar has live jazz on the weekends, and is also home to a whole host of pubs like the Red Lion, The Victoria and The Turnpike.

Food

Fallowfield wouldn’t be the same without its numerous takeaways and pizza parlours, with Dominoes, Papa John’s and Mamma Mia’s pizza being just a few of the popular eateries that can see queues out the door. A hidden gem is Kosmos Taverna – a popular restaurant which serves up delicious greek food and has some amazing student discounts throughout the year. In Withington, café-bar fusions like Fuel and Solomon Grundy are always a popular choice, with a combination of well-priced menus, loads of vegetarian options and live music nights. There are also an abundance of noodle bars and Asian restaurants within this student area, with places like Dream Wok, Fuzion Noodle Bar and YoYo Noodle offering tasty noodle boxes, rice dishes and soups. By night, Fallow Cafe and Koh Tao are the places to go for partying students, but by day both offer some delicious food menus and a relaxed atmosphere, with the ever popular pop-up eatery Vietshack making a regular appearance outside Koh Tao.

Shopping

If shopping is what you’re after, Fallowfield has some great options for everything from clothes to groceries and everything in between! Opposite Owen’s Park Halls is Fallow Vintage – a vintage clothing warehouse offering up super-cheap second hand clothing, homeware and accessories at the simple price of £8 per kilo! Down the road in Withington, you’ll see plenty of charity shops that sell cheap clothing, with one highlight being Deco where you can browse their extensive collection of rare vinyl and CD’s.

Other places worth mentioning are Fallowfield’s Armitage Sports Centre – the main University’s sport facility that houses football fields, tennis and basketball courts, a gym and much more.
